The Calling - Stigmatized (Lyrics)
I cite this controversy because I think the openly gay John's literal embrace of someone most of us perceive as an anti-gay bigot is emblematic of where we are as a movement, as we encounter the second Bush Administration. Many of the most prominent voices in the GLBT community are calling for detente with Bush. Log Cabin Republican leader Rich Tafel declared: "We applaud President-elect Bush for becoming the first Republican President to actively reach out to gay and lesbian Americans." After Bush's inauguration, columnist Andrew Sullivan denounced "the knee-jerk attempt to turn George W. Bush into a homophobe" as "misguided ... because it's clear he isn't one." Elizabeth Birch, director of the Human Rights Campaign (which backed Gore), wrote that "President Bush has largely tried to sidestep gay issues throughout his public career.... Despite his strategy of avoidance, President Bush has taken a few positions as governor and during his campaign that are not gay-supportive, most notably his support in the s pring of 1999 for a law that would ban gay people from adopting children." While not embracing Bush, Birch certainly understates his across-the-board opposition to gay rights.
Meanwhile, the Log Cabin Republicans endorsed former Senator John Ashcroft for Attorney General despite his role in killing James Hormel's nomination to be Ambassador to Luxembourg. In Ashcroft's words (citing the statute on appointments): "A person's sexual conduct is 'within what could be considered and what is eligible for consideration' for ambassadorial nominees." During the debate on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which Ashcroft voted against, he said public schools should be able to discriminate against gay teachers. Yet Log Cabin leaders met with Ashcroft after his confirmation, calling this "his first meeting with a civil rights organization," and proclaiming the Bush Administration "serious about a commitment to equal protection under the law." If this is true, it represents a remarkable turnaround for a person who received a 100 percent rating in the 104th Congress from the Christian Coalition, but a mere ten percent rating from the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and zero per cent from the National Organization for Women. 041b061a72
